Kanya Kumari has been backed by noted actress Madhu Shalini. Srujan Attada writes and directs this small-town love saga that tells the story of two strong individuals who are poles apart. Kanya Kumari is a coming-of-age drama that showcases the love story in a mature way.
But the sad part is that by the time the real conflict is introduced, it is already late and things go haywire. As so much time is wasted establishing the story in the first half, the director Srujan has too much on his hands to handle in the latter part and hence dilutes the proceedings with rushed emotions and lack of depth in character conviction.
The manner in which the hero tries to woo the heroine looks weird and does not land properly in the setup. Just to make things interesting, the love story is elevated through some unique scenes which do not come through. Though the runtime of the film is crisp, Kanya Kumari feels stretched for the most part.
The plot development, subplots, and the way the coming-of-age drama is showcased look a bit outdated. Had the director introduced the subplots and conflict in the love story earlier in the first half, the output would have been a lot better.
However, the director shines in designing the female lead's character in a top-notch manner. The heroine's principles, the way she behaves, and why she rejects love have all been showcased in a decent manner in the first half. But all this does not move the story forward and only establishes the plot.
The basic intention of the film is right and showcases how women in today's world should be allowed to live life on their own despite being from small towns. But the hurried execution spoils the fun for the most part.
Coming to the performances, it is Geeth Saini who steals the show with her stellar performance. Her village belle look, the confidence in her body language, and dialogue delivery, the young actress shines in her part and is the mainstay of the film. The main lead, Sreecharan Rachakonda, also makes an impressive debut and is decent in his role. The chemistry between the lead pair is also decent.
Music by Ravi Nidamarthy is quite good and so was his background score. The small-town visuals by Haricharan K are also impressive. The production design is top-notch and the dialogues are funny, espcially the Srikakulam accent has been used well. But it is the editing that is not up to the mark.
The first half feels lengthy and the second half is cut in such a way that everything feels rushed. Srujan Attada has a great intention to showcase how individual dreams are important in life. But as he wastes too much time in focusing on the main story, the rest of the emotion does not land well.
On the whole, Kanya Kumari is a coming of age romantic drama whose basic idea is good. But it is the dragged narration in the first half and rushed emotions in the second part makes things go haywire. Though the film has good performances, it ends as a below par watch this weekend.
