Paathirathri Review - Ratheena does not disappoint the audience with her latest film, Paathirathri, which is another intense police drama that can be listed among the finest in Malayalam cinema. As anticipated, the film leaves viewers with a heavy heart, wondering whether justice has been done or if it is only a broad subject that changes depending on one's perspective on what is the right thing to do.
After SI Jancy and Constable Hareesh chase an unidentified man into the woods during a night patrol, the turn of events entirely disrupts their ordinary lives. A prominent journalist's death is soon revealed, and the two are concerned about whether he was the victim of their action. The circumstances that follow force them to uncover the truth in order to resolve their difficulties at work. In the meantime, they must deal with and solve the issues in their personal lives as well.
Similar to other recent films like Ronth, Paathirathri examines the brutal dynamics of power struggles in different levels of law enforcement. Meanwhile, Ratheena also portrays loneliness, betrayal, love, and a sense of accountability in the most unvarnished way possible without focusing only on this theme. Every character has been structured to ensure that their portrayal of their vulnerabilities and determination to learn the truth is deeply moving. Although the film moves quickly and does not devote much time to exposing the case or the culprits, the question of whether justice has been done is still open.
One positive part of the film is how its makers examine Jancy and Hareesh's realisation of a common ground and mutual understanding that helps in their own development as individuals. Ratheena's efforts to look into different types of strained marriages without favouring one gender over another are also commendable. The way the audience is given the sense that the case has been solved and there is a surprising twist at the end is what makes the movie worth watching.
Navya Nair is brilliant as Jancy, who constantly tries to conceal her difficulties in facing her reality rather than seizing every chance to demonstrate her worth or competence in the force. Soubin Shahir, meanwhile, performs nuancedly and keeps up his character graph adequately. In this police thriller, Harisree Ashokan, Indrans, Achyuth Kumar, Ann Augustine, and Athmeeya Rajan all give standout performances despite having little screen time. Jakes Bejoy's soundtrack intensifies the film's unsettling tone.
Paathirathri Verdict - Power dynamics in the police system, strained marriages, and the weight of responsibility, as well as truth, are all explored in the most tr ansparent way possible in Ratheena's police drama.
