Revolver Rita movie review: Keerthy Suresh's film is a wasted shot at black comedy burdened by exaggerated humour

Revolver Rita review: The film aims for quirky humor but stumbles with disjointed writing and clichéd characters. It ultimately misses the mark, making it a forgettable addition

Revolver Rita movie plot:

Rita (Keerthy Suresh) lives with her mother and sisters at the quaint town of Pondicherry. But when one day a gangster who knocks at their home, mistakenly dies after a confrontation and freak accident at Rita’s house, the family gets embroiled in a local gang war. With some quirky characters in the loop, how will Rita manage to come out safe?

Revolver Rita is that film which aims straightly for every element that has black comedy written on it. It does not wish to beat around the bush, and wants to be all about the genre. A crime, a few ladies who are perplexed by what has happened, some eccentric thugs, and throw in some illegal activities, there is Revolver Rita for you, every much sticking to the basic ingredients to a recipe. Yet, even as the film does not go beyond to offer anything new, Revolver Rita does not result in a staple watch too. The film, which combines action and dark comedy, lurks in a space that does not even come across middling, thanks to disjointed writing and typical cliches.

An effeminate pimp, a Redin Kingsley-esque character (played by Redin Kingsley himself) who does not apart from his peculiar mannerism, Rita who is obviously oblivious on how to cover a dead body but taking decisions, her mother (Radhika Sarathkumar) who is a little more clueless, and more such characters make up Revolver Rita. But with little to less investment on these characters, and a world-building that does not seem inviting, Revolver Rita becomes a flat narrative which has nothing new to offer. The comedy and punchlines too, come off monotonous that does not evoke any quips here and there.

The shades of Kolamavu Kokila are there in Revolver Rita. That a family headed by a woman, indulging in a crime, while coming across innocent in public’s eye. But Revolver Rita forgets to make a connection with the screenplay. The gang wars become for the sake of it, and the exaggerated style of acting, only gets a lot tiring. This mainly comes because the wafer-thin writing becomes a see-through for you lack to get invested into the happenings of the film. Why is there a need to empathise with Rita and co. or is the thug war becoming entertaining? The film falters in such areas, making Revolver Rita a film that becomes a wasted potential that does not give anything to remember, but its exaggerated comedy that only does little good to the film.

Revolver Rita movie verdict:

Revolver Rita is faltered attempt at making a crime comedy film, for neither of the elements are fully utilised in the writing. The comedy is exaggerated by questionable, the characters lack any impressionable interest, and with forgettable, template story, Revolver Rita misfires big time.
