Ronkini Bhavan Review

2025 has been amazing for Bengali OTT films and series. Recently, Ganoshotru was released, and it received a lot of love. Now, Ronkini Bhavan, a psychological thriller, has a gripping plot. Ronkini Bhavan is one such psychological thriller that stays with you for a long time after you finish watching it because it is not based on a mere thrilling narrative but focuses on inherited trauma and patriarchal control.

Ronkini Bhavan unfolds in a desolate, haunted ancestral mansion called Ronkini Bhavan, located on the outskirts of Purulia, West Bengal, in the mid-1990s. Juthika (Shyamoupti Mudly), a new bride, enters the mansion expecting a new life, but finds suffocating silence and whispered dread because the moment she enters, her father-in-law dies.

She finds out that everyone has weird behavior and gradually she learns that every bride before her has met a tragic end, and when she asks the family members how they died, the members link to a supposed curse from the ancestral goddess, Ronkini Devi.

Juthika tries to uncover whether these events are divine punishment or man-made horrors, battling deep-rooted prejudices and patriarchal control to find the truth and survive. She also takes help from her police friend.

Juthika's mother-in-law, Padmavati (Bidipta Chakraborty), seems like a dignified woman, but she has a dark childhood. The narrative is so beautifully executed that you never feel bored at any scene and finish it in one go due to the gripping suspense. Padmavati's childhood has been traumatic, and she had to face toxic parental control, bashing, humiliation, verbal abuse, and more just because she wanted to explore studying and dancing, but could not, as 'girls are not allowed.' However, her brother used to get all the privileges, highlighting gender discrimination.

One day, Padmavati's fate changed when she saved the son of an influential family and became his wife. Her father-in-law discovered a Ronkini Devi idol from a pond and started thinking of the Goddess as their daughter of the house, so they used to worship her own hands. After his death, Padmavati took the responsibility.

The perspective of having control of everything in Ronkini Bhavan has got into her head, and whoever used to come to her path to stop, she murdered them, even her husband and son, apart from her daughters-in-law. She forms a psychological need for control and dominance, shaped by childhood trauma in which her voice was consistently ignored. However, everything comes to an end, and so does Padmavati, who dies after confronting and confessing everything to herself during a period of mental instability.

Shyamoupti Mudly plays Juthika, a newlywed who travels to the haunted Ronkini Bhavan. She uncovers the house's dark secrets by balancing fear, curiosity, and determination.

Bidipta Chakraborty delivers a chilling performance as Padmavati, Juthika’s mother-in-law. From a painful childhood of gender discrimination to her downfall in the need for absolute control, she embodies both danger and vulnerability, culminating in Padmavati's final, haunting confession. Gourab Roy Chowdhury, who plays Adityanath, the husband of Juthika, adds emotional depth and narrative support, grounding the story amid the suspense. Directed by Abhrajit Sen, the series also features Avery Singha Roy as Ballari, Siddharta Ghosh as Shibnath, Aniruddha Gupta as Rudranath, Ishani Sengupta as Kamalini, and others.
