Yenugu Thondam Ghattikachalam is written and directed by the popular actor-director Ravi Babu. He usually makes films in two genres, thrillers and comedies. With Yenugu Thondam Ghattikachalam, he returns to comedy, and the film is now streaming on ETV Win and OTTplay Premium.
For those unaware, Ravi Babu is known for his unique brand of humor, and he attempts the same here as well. Though the story he picks is quite interesting, the way he narrates it leaves much to be desired. What could have been an emotional and fun comedy related to old-age issues turns into an insurance company drama that drives the film.
The initial episodes featuring Naresh and his wedding-related conflicts are handled well, but that charm is short-lived. The insurance-related scenes and over-the-top comedy often put you off. Ravi Babu tries a quirky style of humor, but it doesn’t land for the most part.
There are so many exaggerated moments that it becomes hard to keep track. There’s even a bizarre scene where a body kept in a fridge for days suddenly comes to life, and several such sequences make little sense.
Ravi Babu brings in several seasoned actors in key roles, but none make much of an impact. One of the better aspects of the film is how Ravi Babu tries to deliver a message about how money dictates relationships today and how even family members are driven by greed. This part is showcased well.
Apart from that, there isn’t much that stands out. In terms of performances, Naresh is natural as always, perfectly fitting a role suited to his age. Varshini’s character, though laced with a few double-meaning dialogues, adds liveliness to the narrative. Seasoned actors like Ali, Raghu Babu, Giridhar, and Srikanth Bharath are just about okay.
Ravi Babu’s films usually have a distinctive production design, and the same applies here. The film unfolds in limited locations and has a unique tone. However, the editing is weak, even though the dialogue is amusing. Had the film maintained basic emotions and a simpler narrative, it could have made a lot more impact.
On the whole, Yenugu Thondam Ghattikachalam is a film that has an interesting premise, but Ravi Babu's over-the-top narrative disappoints. There are a few comedy scenes, and it is good to see some old comedians in key roles, but the rest of the film is just ordinary and boasts of nothing new.
