AUS vs IND, 2025 ODI series: Australia recall star batter to replace injured Green

Australia have been forced into another late change for their upcoming three-match ODI series against India, with all-rounder Cameron Green ruled out due to a minor side injury. The setback has opened the door for Marnus Labuschagne to earn a lifeline in the 50-over format after a prolific run of domestic form.

Camron Green is sidelined

Green, 26, experienced discomfort during training in Perth earlier this week. Cricket Australia confirmed the injury as “low grade,” stressing that his omission from the ODI squad was precautionary.

The Western Australian is expected to return for his state’s next Sheffield Shield fixture on October 28 as part of his build-up toward the home Ashes series.

“Green will complete a short period of rehabilitation and is tracking to return to play in round three of the Sheffield Shield to continue his preparation for the Ashes,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

Although the setback is minor, the timing is far from ideal with the first Ashes Test against England in Perth only five weeks away. Captain Pat Cummins is still recovering from a lumbar stress injury and remains in doubt for the series opener, while pacers Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett are also sidelined.

Jhye Richardson, meanwhile, continues his recovery from shoulder surgery but impressed with long spells in the nets during Australia’s training on Thursday.

Green’s bowling workload has been tightly managed since undergoing spinal surgery last October, in which doctors fused his L4 vertebrae.

He made a promising return last week for Western Australia, bowling four overs and picking up a wicket against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield. Importantly, the current side issue is unrelated to his previous back operation.

Labuschagne called back for the ODIs

In Green’s absence, selectors have recalled Labuschagne, who has been in irresistible form for Queensland. The right-hander struck his fourth century of the domestic season on Thursday, scoring 159 against South Australia in Adelaide.

His recall represents a remarkable comeback after he was left out of the original squad following a poor tour of South Africa in August, where he registered two single-digit scores.

Labuschagne will join the ODI squad in Perth after completing Queensland’s ongoing Shield match and is now in contention for immediate selection in the starting XI.

His state teammate Matthew Renshaw, who formed a 134-run partnership with Labuschagne earlier in the season, praised his resurgence. “He’s just so on, peak Marnus,” Renshaw told The Unplayable Podcast. “It’s really good to see, and it’s good that the work he’s done in the off-season is working out for him now.”

Ticket demand for the Australia vs India ODIs is very high, with fewer than 3,500 seats left for Sunday’s opener at Perth Stadium. The second ODI at Adelaide Oval on October 23 is nearing a sellout, while Sydney’s SCG encounter on October 25 is already booked out.
