One of the most significant achievements from Northeast United’s victory is becoming the first team since 1991 to successfully defend the Durand Cup title. The Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, has seen many champions over the decades, but none have managed to retain the trophy for over three decades.
In the 2024 season, they won their first major trophy by beating Mohun Bagan Super Giant in Kolkata to win the title. In the 2025 season, Juan Pedro Benali’s men defeated Diamond Harbour FC by 6-1 to win the Durand Cup in consecutive seasons.
Last time it happened when East Bengal had defended their title in the 1991 season by beating the BSF Football Team.
By retaining the title, Northeast United have also entered an elite group, becoming only the fourth team since independence to win the Durand Cup in consecutive years.
East Bengal in 1951 and 1952 were the first team to achieve this feat. However, Mohun Bagan, with four instances of defending the title, is the most successful team in Durand’s history. BSF are the other team to have this feat.
