The "Happy Slam" is about to live up to its name in the most nostalgic way possible. As part of the inaugural Australian Open 2026 Opening Ceremony six-time champion Roger Federer is set to make a triumphant return to Rod Laver Arena. In a clash that bridges two generations of tennis excellence, the Swiss maestro will take to the court alongside world No. 15 and three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud. For fans who have spent the last four years missing the elegant shot-making of the 20-time Major winner, this exhibition is more than just a match; it is a formal farewell and a celebration of one of the sport's greatest icons.

Date: Saturday, January 16, 2026

  • Time: 7:30 PM AEDT (Local Melbourne Time), 2 PM IST
  • Venue: Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park
  • This star-studded evening, dubbed the "Battle of the World No. 1s," will feature not only Federer and Ruud but also appearances by legends Andre Agassi Pat Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt.

“I’m a little nervous,” Roger Federer said as he casually greeted the press.

“To be honest, I haven’t done this whole press conference thing anymore,” he added.

“I’m happy there’s a moment for the crowd, for me personally, but then also just being on the court with Lleyton that I share so much with, Pat that I always loved playing against – even though I never beat him. He was one of my favourite players. And then Andre, I was fortunate to play against him 10 times or so. Just being together with those guys is going to make me feel better as well.”
