Ravindra Jadeja named vice-captain in Pant's absence

Mid-Order shakeup: Devdutt Padikkal recalled, Karun Nair dropped

A significant change in the middle order sees the return of Devdutt Padikkal, replacing Karun Nair, who was dropped due to inconsistent performances during the England tour earlier in 2025.

Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized the need for consistency and form, pointing out that Padikkal’s recent performances offered more assurance.

New wicketkeeping options: Dhruv Jurel as first-choice, with N. Jagadeesan as backup

The absence of Pant has also led to fresh wicketkeeping options.

Dhruv Jurel will don the gloves as the primary wicketkeeper, while Tamil Nadu’s N. Jagadeesan, who impressed during the recent Duleep Trophy and the domestic season prior to that, is included as the backup.

Pace Bowling unit retains experience despite fitness concerns

Jasprit Bumrah’s inclusion, despite ongoing concerns over his fitness, highlights the team’s emphasis on maintaining a spearhead of world-class pace bowling. Alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, the pace attack aims to provide a strong front for India in home conditions.

Meantime, Akash Deep, who had done well during the England vs India test series, has been sidelined. The medium pacer from Bengal, though, has been named in the Rest of India squad for the upcoming Irani Cup.

Abhimanyu Easwaran’s wait continues

Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who has been a domestic stalwart, has been dropped from the squad after not playing a single game in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and Anderson-Tendulkar series.

Although Ajit Agarkar has expressed that it will only take a call to bring him into the squad, and just because this is a home series, he can be called if needed.

However, Sai Sudharsan has been kept in the squad, who made his debut during the England series.
