Mohammed Shami has expressed his frustration over being left out of India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, raising questions over the selection panel’s judgment. The veteran pacer argued that if he is deemed fit enough to play the Duleep Trophy, there is no reason why he cannot be considered for T20 cricket. Shami, who has been a key figure in India’s bowling attack over the last decade, said the constant doubt cast over his fitness has left him with little expectation of donning the national jersey again.

The 35-year-old speedster had recently cleared the mandatory Bronco fitness test in Bengaluru and was included in the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. Yet, his exclusion from the Asia Cup side has reignited debates over whether form or fitness should be the primary yardstick for selection. Shami pointed out that his domestic participation itself reflects his readiness to compete, and he feels that sidelining him from white-ball formats is unfair.
"I don't blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I'm right for the team, select me; if I'm not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what's best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I'm granted an opportunity, I'll give my best. I'm working hard. If I can play the Duleep Trophy, then why won't I be able to play T20 cricket?” he told News24 Sports.
His IPL 2025 campaign with Sunrisers Hyderabad, however, did not help his case. Shami managed only six wickets in nine matches, struggling with both rhythm and economy. While selectors have likely taken his recent numbers into account, the pacer believes that one bad season should not define his overall capability, especially when he has delivered consistently in high-pressure tournaments in the past.
Admitting his disappointment, Shami said he no longer has much hope of an India comeback. At the same time, he maintained that if the call does come, he will be ready to give his best in any format. His statement reflects both resignation and determination, accepting the present reality while holding on to the spirit that defined his career.
The snub has sparked conversations among fans and analysts about how selectors weigh experience against form. For Shami, the Duleep Trophy now becomes a stage to prove that his fitness and skills remain intact. While his chances of returning to India’s T20 setup appear slim, his candid remarks highlight the frustration of a senior pro who feels capable, yet overlooked.
