For over a decade, Virat Kohli has been synonymous with batting consistency and dominance across formats, especially against Australia, a team he has so often thrived against. However, in a surprising turn during the 1st ODI of the 2025 India vs Australia series in Perth, the star batter was dismissed for a duck, his first-ever in Australian conditions in ODIs. Known for his fierce competitiveness and ability to rise to the occasion, Kohli’s rare failure was as shocking as it was statistically significant. Facing the fiery pace of Mitchell Starc, Kohli edged a length delivery outside off-stump and was caught at backward point after just eight balls, leaving India reeling early in their innings.

This dismissal marked Kohli’s first duck in Australia in ODIs and his 39th career duck across all formats, a rare blemish in an otherwise illustrious record. Interestingly, it was also only his third duck against Australia in ODI history, underlining just how unusual such an occurrence is for the prolific batter.

Kohli’s early exit added to India’s woes as captain Rohit Sharma managed only 8 runs before falling to Josh Hazlewood, while Shubman Gill also departed cheaply. India’s score of 25/3 became their lowest ODI total when Rohit, Kohli, and Gill all featured in the top order, a testament to Australia’s early dominance with the new ball.
The innings also saw Kohli’s second-longest duck in ODIs, lasting eight deliveries, his previous longest being a nine-ball duck against England in the 2023 World Cup. Despite the setback, Kohli’s record in Australia remains exceptional, with over 2,000 runs across formats and an average above 45.
While this dismissal will be remembered as a rare low point, Kohli’s track record of bouncing back strongly after early setbacks suggests that this duck is more a temporary stumble than a worrying trend. For India, though, the early collapse highlighted the need for composure and partnerships in testing overseas conditions.
