Team India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the much-anticipated second Test against South Africa in Guwahati due to a persistent neck injury sustained during the first Test in Kolkata. The news was confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as Gill continues his recovery and preparation for a longer rehabilitation period with specialist treatment in Mumbai.

Gill got injured on Day 2 of Eden Test

Gill suffered the injury on Day 2 of the opening Test at Eden Gardens when he experienced severe neck spasms while attempting a sweep shot. Immediately after the incident, he retired hurt and was rushed to the hospital for a thorough examination.

Though discharged within a day and initially optimistic about recovery, the Indian captain was later advised by the BCCI medical team to prioritise his health and not risk aggravating the injury by playing too soon.​

Gill went to Guwahati with the team

The 26-year-old made the journey to Guwahati with the squad on November 19, raising hopes among fans and teammates that he might be able to participate in the Test starting November 22. However, after rigorous fitness assessments and training sessions, it became evident that Gill had not sufficiently recovered to face South Africa’s formidable bowling attack. Officials confirmed that he will be flown back to Mumbai for further specialist assessment and treatment, with no immediate timeline for his return.​

Pant to lead India

In Gill’s absence, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been named captain for the second Test. This leadership shift adds additional responsibility on Pant’s shoulders as India aims to bounce back from their 30-run defeat in the opener. The change also triggers potential alterations in the batting lineup, with players like Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Nitish Kumar Reddy under consideration to fill the void left by Gill in the top order.​
