Gill went to Guwahati with the team

The 26-year-old made the journey to Guwahati with the squad on November 19, raising hopes among fans and teammates that he might be able to participate in the Test starting November 22. However, after rigorous fitness assessments and training sessions, it became evident that Gill had not sufficiently recovered to face South Africa’s formidable bowling attack. Officials confirmed that he will be flown back to Mumbai for further specialist assessment and treatment, with no immediate timeline for his return.

Pant to lead India

In Gill’s absence, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been named captain for the second Test. This leadership shift adds additional responsibility on Pant’s shoulders as India aims to bounce back from their 30-run defeat in the opener. The change also triggers potential alterations in the batting lineup, with players like Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Nitish Kumar Reddy under consideration to fill the void left by Gill in the top order.
