Early 1990s

Their first ODI series took place during South Africa’s tour of India in 1991. It was a 3-match series where India edged South Africa, winning 2-1.

India showed strong batting performances and won the first two ODIs in Kolkata and Gwalior, but went on to lose the final ODI in Delhi.

The subsequent year, in 1992, South Africa hosted India for a longer 7-match series. South Africa emerged dominant, winning 5-2, showcasing their strength on home turf and indicating the challenge that India would face in South African conditions.

Late 1990s to early 2000s

Between 1996 and 2000, the teams regularly engaged in bilateral ODI series. India claimed a victory in the 1996-97 benefit match hosted in India, and later in the 1999-2000 India series, South Africa triumphed at home by winning 3 out of 5 matches.

The early 2000s saw balanced results with South Africa and India sharing wins in both home and away series. For instance, the 2005-06 South Africa tour of India was split evenly with a 2-2 result, underscoring the growing parity in competitions.

Mid-2000s to early 2010s

India toured South Africa in 2006-07 for 4 ODIs but faced a humiliating 0-4 series loss, revealing their struggle to adapt fully to South African pitches.

Nevertheless, India bounced back in the series like the Future Cup 2007 in Ireland, with a 2-1 series victory. In 2009-10, South Africa toured India for a short 3-match series where India narrowly took the honors, winning 2-1.

But the trend shifted again in the 2010-11 series in South Africa, where India lost 2-3 after a competitive contest. This era was marked by South Africa’s dominance at home but increasing challenge from India on their turf.

2010s

During 2013-14, India toured South Africa and faced a tough series, losing 0-2 with one match abandoned. South Africa’s bowling dismantled the Indian batting line-up.

But India turned the tables at home in the 2015-16 series, where South Africa won 3-2 in a hard-fought 5-match contest.

The highlight came in 2017-18 when India completed a remarkable 5-1 victory in a 6-match ODI series in South Africa, their first series win in the country, driven by dominant batting performances and disciplined bowling.

2020s

The rivalry continued fiercely in the 2020s. India toured South Africa again in 2021-22, but in a 3-match series, South Africa emerged victorious 3-0, demonstrating home advantage and clinical bowling.

Yet, South Africa’s subsequent India tour in 2022-23 saw a closer contest with India winning the 3-match series 2-1. Their latest meeting in South Africa in 2023-24 again resulted in a 2-1 victory for India, reflecting their better performances in overseas conditions, especially in ODI format.
