Surya wanted to bowl first at the chasing-friendly Eden Gardens

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and chose to field first to ensure they are following the right path to win at the Eden Gardens. Stating Eden Gardens as a 'chase-friendly' ground, Suryakumar asked Shai Hope to bat first. India named an unchanged XI while West Indies brought in one change as Brandon King was replaced by spinner Akeal Hosein.

West Indies started well, but Bumrah brought India back

West Indies captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase gave the Carribeans a solid start with the bat. Hope, though, had a tougher and slow start; it was Roston Chase who picked up the lengths early from the Indian bowlers and did not hesitate to go over the top as well.

Chase was so good that Suryakumar was forced to introduce four bowlers inside the first five overs of the innings. Axar Patel bowled three overs inside the first seven overs as Varun Chakravarthy had a late entry to the bowling lineup.

Bumrah struck twice to hand India the advantage

Varun came and struck gold in his first over by dismissing Hope (32) in the 9th over. But India's real comeback happened when Jasprit Bumrah, in his second spell of the inning, struck twice to first dismiss the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer (27 off 12 balls) and then Roston Chase (40 off 25) balls in the 12th over.

The 60,000+ crowd at the Eden Gardens appreciated the legendary bowler rescuing India again as 'Boom Boom Boomrah' echoed through the gallery. Hardik Pandya then removed Sherfane Rutherford (14 off 9 balls) in the 15th over to hand India the advantage going into the slog overs.

Powell and Holder counterattack

But right when it looked like that, India had the upper hand, Rovman Powell and Jason Holder counterattacked the Indian bowlers.

The attack started with Arshdeep Singh bowling on both sides of the pitch, which allowed Powell to free his hand and take 24 runs from the 17th over.

Powell and Holder helped West Indies add 70 in the final five overs to take them to a fighting total, although the pitch suggested they might be 15-20 runs short in the virtual knockout game in the City of Joy.
