Tottenham Hotspur's preseason preparations have been dealt a severe blow as the club confirmed that midfielder James Maddison has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and will undergo surgery. The injury, sustained during a friendly match against Newcastle United in Seoul is expected to sideline the England international for the majority of the upcoming 2025-26 season.

The incident occurred in the 86th minute of the match, with Maddison collapsing in apparent agony without any contact from another player. He was visibly distressed as he was stretchered off the pitch by medical staff. The 28-year-old had only been on the field for nine minutes as a substitute.

Tottenham released a statement confirming the devastating news: "We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul."

The club added that his surgery will take place in the coming days, after which he will begin his rehabilitation with the medical team. This is a cruel setback for Maddison, as the injury is to the same knee that kept him out of the end of last season, including the Europa League final.

New manager Thomas Frank described the injury as "brutal" and expressed his concern immediately after the match. The long recovery process associated with an ACL injury means Tottenham will be without one of their key creative players for a significant period.

The news comes at a difficult time for Spurs, who have also recently seen the departure of Heung-min Son.The club may now be forced to re-enter the transfer market to find a replacement for Maddison.
