During the third day of the England vs India, 4th test in Manchester, Root first went past Rahul Dravid's record with a single off Jasprit Bumrah in the 57th over of the inning. He then took another single off Mohammed Siraj in the next over to cross Jacques Kallis' record.
The whole Old Trafford crowd rose to the occasion to acknowledge the feat of one of the greatest test batters of this era. Root, who was once very far behind in the race among the 'fav four' of modern cricket against Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith, now has the most test runs and most test tons among them.
The way Joe Root is going at the moment in test cricket and the number of test matches England play, Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most test runs is now seriously under threat.
Root is currently about 2600 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar's 15921 test runs. If he plays at least 25 test matches in the next two years, he will surely be close to Tendulkar's record, if he continues in this form.
Meantime, he is just 88 runs away from going past Ricky Ponting's 13,1378 test runs and becoming the second-highest run scorer in test cricket history.
