PSL 2026: Why will the tournament be played in empty stadiums? Here is the answer
Mohsin Naqvi announced that the PSL will be played in empty stadiums.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 is set to begin under a shadow of unprecedented "abstinence," as regional clashes in the Gulf force the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to strip the tournament of its usual flamboyance and glamour.

When the season kicks off on March 26, the PSL will be played in silent stadiums, with no opening ceremony, and a schedule restricted to just two cities, Karachi and Lahore.

Why will the stands be empty?

The main reason behind these drastic changes is not a lack of interest, but a severe fuel and energy crisis.

Following the escalation of the war between Israel, the USA, and Iran, the supply chains in West Asia have gone down the hill.

To manage the resulting national shortage, the Pakistan government has enforced strict movement restrictions across the country.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that the league cannot have mass public gatherings while the rest of the nation is under "work from home" orders and school closures.

"We can’t ask people to restrict their movements and then have 30,000 people in stadiums for PSL games every day," Naqvi stated during a press conference in Lahore on Sunday.

Key changes for PSL 2026

At least for the initial phase of the tournament, all games will be played in empty stadiums to prevent public travel.

Along with that, the traditional high-budget musical and laser show has been dumped as part of the national austerity drive.

Moreover, to minimise the fuel consumption needed for team travel and logistics, the tournament will be shortened solely to Karachi and Lahore.
