As the India vs Australia ODI series heated up, Ravichandran Ashwin stepped into a growing debate surrounding veteran pacer Mohammed Shami and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Shami’s public frustration over being left out of the ODI squad drew a sharp response from Agarkar, and now, Ashwin has urged both sides to focus on clear communication rather than airing grievances in public.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s take on the communication gap

Ashwin, known for his sharp cricketing insight, addressed the controversy during a discussion on his YouTube channel. He noted that Indian cricket has a long-standing habit of indirect communication, which often fuels unnecessary headlines and misunderstandings. “Everything here works through indirect talk,” Ashwin observed, stressing that conversations between players and selectors should be straightforward and private.

According to him, Shami’s public remarks were a reflection of uncertainty rather than rebellion. The experienced bowler had expressed disappointment after being left out despite proving his form in domestic matches. Agarkar, on the other hand, defended the decision, citing workload management and fitness concerns. Ashwin suggested that if there had been a proper conversation beforehand, the matter wouldn’t have escalated.

"I will say one thing frankly, everything in Indian cricket runs on indirect speech. I really wish that it changes. It has to change from both the players' side and the selectors' side as well. What I have noticed is that if something indirect is said, it is bound to come out in the news. Look what Shami did. He performed and then talked in the press conference, there is nothing wrong with that. But why is he talking all of this? Because he does not have clarity. But, at the same time, I really loved how Ajit Agarkar handled it. I really hope that phone call has happened," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
