Rift between Stokes and McCullum; will maintain 'peace' targeting ICC World Cup 2027

During a review, Stokes criticized the "Bazball" approach, suggesting it has become predictable and ineffective against top teams. McCullum countered by questioning Stokes' leadership.

There were reports of rift between the Test captain of the England team, Ben Stokes, and head coach Brendon McCullum.

The bonding between the captain and coach of the England Men's Cricket team, which once seemed unbreakable, has faced its first major controversy. After a tough 1-4 defeat against Australia, reports have emerged of a significant rift between Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. While the duo has reportedly reached a "peace" to lead England through the ODI World Cup 2027 the fallout from the ECB’s review meeting has drawn back the curtain on a partnership under immense pressure to produce results.

Why did the rift take place?

The tension reportedly arose during the review of England’s performance in Australia. With only a single victory in the fourth Ashes Test, England looked tactically beaten. This led to a rare conflict between the coach and captain of the English Test side during the review session.

Stokes' take

The captain reportedly challenged the sustainability of the bold "Bazball" system. Stokes indicated that international teams have finally "found the answers" to England’s high-risk style of batting. He suggested that the method that once revolutionised their game now has become predictable to other teams.

Not only that, the "Bazball" system has not given them results against better sides. Although they have been able to win Test matches from unheard situations and made the game more 'entertaining', they have not been able to win against teams like Australia and even India in recent times.

McCullum's counter

The head coach, Brendon McCullum, didn't hold back and gave a solid reply to the captain's comments.

McCullum reportedly questioned Stokes’ captaincy during the Ashes.

The former Kiwi captain felt that some of Stokes’ on-field decisions during the Ashes were "confusing" for the players. Not only that, he claimed that the captain himself had failed to fully commit to the attacking mindset when the pressure was at its peak.

This isn't the first controversy coming from the England camp. Earlier, Liam Livingstone who was dropped from the team in early 2025, accused McCullum and Managing Director Rob Key of a lack of "respect and communication".

Despite the verbal arguments, both Stokes and McCullum have agreed to move forward. With McCullum’s contract running until the end of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2027, the pair has a long road ahead to prove that their 'BazBall' approach is still the right fit for England.
