Team India suffered a worrying setback during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, as vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was taken to hospital after picking up a rib injury while fielding. The incident occurred midway through Australia’s innings when Iyer made a full-length dive near the boundary to stop a ball and appeared to land awkwardly. He was immediately seen holding his left side in pain before being escorted off the field by the team physio. Later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer had been taken for further medical evaluation, raising concern among fans and team management.
In a brief medical statement, the BCCI clarified that Shreyas had sustained an injury to his left rib cage and was sent to a local hospital in Sydney for precautionary scans. The board assured that the medical team is closely monitoring his condition, and a detailed update will be provided once reports are received.
The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for India, who were already struggling to find batting momentum in the series. Iyer’s absence left a visible gap in both the middle order and the fielding setup. The vice-captain has been one of India’s most reliable limited-overs batters in recent months, providing balance and stability under pressure.
"Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury," said BCCI.
While the initial assessment suggests a rib contusion, his participation in the remaining fixtures remains uncertain. If the scans reveal significant bruising or a minor fracture, Iyer could be rested for upcoming matches as a precaution.
