Match referee Richie Richardson confirmed that India were two overs short of the target even after time allowances were considered. Stand-in captain KL Rahul accepted the charge on behalf of the team, meaning no formal hearing was required.

The sanction means each Indian player will face a deduction from their match fee, as every over short of the requirement carries a 5% fine. This slow over rate penalty has once again highlighted the ICC’s stricter enforcement of over-rate regulations across formats, especially in high-intensity bilateral series like India vs South Africa.

"India was charged in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences. The players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time if sanctioned," read a statement by ICC.
