Suryakumar Yadav defended Rohit Sharma quashing Congress leader Shama Mohamed's 'fat' remark by praising the efforts put in by the player.

The Indian cricket team is all set to face New Zealand in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on Sunday, March 9. With Rohit Sharma leading the charge, the team has been in sublime form and has remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. Despite Rohit's long run success as a skipper in the official ICC tournaments, the player was recently criticised over his fitness. Shama Mohammed, one of the leaders from the Indian National Congress (INC), made harsh comments on Rohit Sharma's fitness, calling him 'fat' in a post on X. Amidst the controversy, India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has come in support of Rohit Sharma, dismissing the fitness concerns raised by the Congress leader.
"If you see him as a captain, in the last four years he has taken the team to the finals of four ICC trophies, so it is a big thing. If a person is playing cricket for 15-20 years, it is a big thing. I know how important fitness is for him. I have seen him closely, he works very hard – according to me, he is at the top & I wish him all the best for the finals,” said Suryakumar Yadav.
The player further wished luck to the Indian cricket team, who'll be up against the Kiwis on the upcoming Sunday. He said, "The team has been playing exceptionally well, and if they continue to carry the same form, then the final would be just another game."
The upcoming Sunday is all set for an epic clash between India and New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium. New Zealand has emerged to be the second-best team after India in the tournament and would be itching to avenge the group stage loss in the finals. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma would be keen to add one more ICC trophy to his cabinet after the 2024 T20I WC victory.
