Replacing one spinner with another is quite normal in test cricket. But, for England and world cricket, the inclusion of Liam Dawson is more interesting than it seems.
Liam Andrew Dawson is an English spin-bowling all-rounder who plays for Hampshire in county cricket. The slow left-arm orthodox spinner had started his career as a top-order batter but slowly turned his focus to bowling.
The 35-year-old all-rounder had made his debut way back in 2016 in ODIs, Tests and T20Is. However, he played his last test in 2017 before returning to the longest format after a gap of 8 years.
The interesting part is that, although Dawson returned to the English team mainly as a bowling all-rounder, he has more than 10,000 first-class runs in his career. In the meantime, no current Indian batter has that amount of first-class runs.
He also has 18 first-class hundreds and 56 fifties, a feat that only a very few No.8 batters in the world have in their CV. He also has 371 first-class wickets in his career.
In the current season, Dawson has scored 536 runs at 44.66 and taken 21 wickets.
