England and Australia will wear black armbands on Day 1 of the 2nd Test to honour former England batter Robin Smith, with a moment of silence planned before play.

England and Australia will pause competitive rivalry on the opening day of the second Test to honour the late Robin Smith, the former England and Hampshire batter who passed away earlier this week. Players from both sides will wear black armbands, acknowledging the contribution of a cricketer widely respected for his courage, technical skill and resilience at the highest level. The tribute reflects Smith’s influence on English cricket and the legacy he leaves behind.

Before the play began, a moment’s silence was held ahead of the national anthems. This gesture gives supporters inside the stadium and those watching around the world a chance to reflect on Smith’s career and accomplishments. Known as “The Judge” for his calm persona and disciplined approach, Smith was admired for the way he handled some of the quickest bowlers of his era, particularly during intense Ashes battles.
Smith represented England across formats between 1988 and 1996, earning a reputation as one of the toughest players of his generation. His fearlessness against high-paced spells from the likes of the West Indies and Australia made him a fan favourite. Beyond the numbers, he remained a humble and grounded figure in the sport, which is why his passing has deeply touched the cricketing community.
In the ongoing 2nd Test between Australia and England, the hosts dropped Nathan Lyon and have gone into the team with an all pace attack. They have made a bold move here since Lyon missed his home Test for the second time since 2011. In place of him, Australia have included Michael Neser.
The hosts will miss the services of captain Pat Cummins again since he hasn't recovered from his injury yet. Meanwhile, Steve Smith has led the team well and will be looking forward to doing the same in the upcoming matches.
