Iga Swiatek wins her maiden Wimbledon title

Iga Swiatek needed a little less than an hour to get to championship point in her first-ever Wimbledon final. And then, moments later, she dropped to the ground, ecstatically, having won, against Amanda Anisimova. She is the first Polish player ever to win Wimbledon. This win makes Swiatek a 6-time Grand Slam winner, with the Australian Open the only one that’s still evading her.

Was it a case of nerves or did Anisimova just have no answer to Swiatek’s precision play? Anisimova, who only days ago demolished World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka to set up her first-ever Grand Slam final, could not hold any of her service games and didn’t put up much of a fight during Swiatek’s either in the first set that the latter took for 6 games to none (6-0).

The second set was no different. This was the day that Anisimova froze, while Swiatek made no mistake whatsoever, playing her best tennis on grass. 6-0 was the score this time too and that goes a long way to show just how one-sided this match was. Anisimova was unconsolable after the match and during the presentation and fought back tears while congratulating Iga, whom she called an inspiration. She thanked the fans who supported her throughout the tournament and helped her have an incredible fortnight, even though she ran out of gas in the end and wished she could have put on a better performance.

On her part, the new Wimbledon champion said that while she had not really dreamt of ever winning on the grass court, she acknowledged that her team had more confidence in her capabilities than she had, especially since she has not had a great start to the year.

Up next, on July 13, it is time for the men's singles final, which will have Carlos Alcaraz defending his title and bidding for a third consecutive one against World. No 1 Jannik Sinner. The match on Centre Court will begin at 8 pm (IST)
