If there is one primary thing the evolution of the streaming space in India, or any other part of the world, has done, it has to be the attention it brought towards regional content. Industries in India that had somewhere made peace with being niche suddenly realized their potential and the demand they have, and the ecosystem flourished. One such industry in India was the Marathi Film Industry which kind of found a new family amid the pandemic and the time that followed. Old films were rediscovered, the art of the artists who deserved recognition long ago was paid homage, and it was a very welcoming time. One player in this good time was Amazon Prime Video, a streamer that sits with some of the most precious Marathi movies under its umbrella.

Prime Video has been consistent in bringing to us some very interesting regional content from across the country. As for Marathi, the streamer has some very interesting movies that have impressed the Marathi-speaking audience for years but have stayed undiscovered by the non-Marathi-speaking audience. The first reason was the language barrier and the other was a lack of a platform.

So now as many of them are present on Amazon Prime Video, we list down some of the most well-made Marathi films from over the years for you. So read on and add them all to your must-watch list as fast as you can.

Cast: Swapnil Joshi, Ankush Chaudhari, Urmilla Kanetkar Kothare, Jitendra Joshi, and Saie Tamhankar.

Director: Sanjay Jadhav.

For starters, Duniyadari is your perfect film to begin the journey with. It is a movie made in the recent past about a time that is even decades before them and then jumps to the present day. A story about a group of friends from college who have seen together love, betrayal, heartbreaks, failures, tragedies, and even deaths. When a reunion at an old age brings them together, you see the story of the man who still bonds with them even when he is not present. Keep that tissue box handy.

Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi (1988)

Cast: Ashok Saraf, Laxmikant Berde, Ashwini Bhave, and Supriya Pilgaonkar.

Director: Sachin Pilgaonkar.

From starters, we directly take you to the content of legends. This is Sachin Pilgaonkar directing one of the most hilarious films not just in Marathi but in the Indian Film Industry back in 1988. A movie that stars the legendary Laxmikant Berde alongside another legend Ashok Saraf as they all lead a comedy of errors where two couples can go to any extent to make their relationship work, even if this means the men have to disguise themselves and live as women.

Balgandharva (2011)

Cast: Subodh Bhave, Vibhavari Deshpande, and Kishor Kadam.

Director: Ravi Jadhav.

This is a golden chapter of Marathi literature unfolding on the screen. A movie that talks of the time when Bal Gandharva ruled the stage. A man dressed in an opulent female costume sang like no one else could and should enthrall the audience a new genre of entertainment was born. The movie has been seen for Subodh’s impeccable performance and his love for the material.

Baapjanma (2017)

Cast: Pushkaraj Chirputkar, Sunil Godabole, and Sachin Khedekar.

Director: Nipun Dharmadhikari.

What happens when parents get old? What happens when they are left alone to witness the most vulnerable transition of their existence? Sachin Khedekar’s Baapjanma is indeed a story that pokes where it should be, but it is the performance by the actor that makes this movie a must-watch. The film is very underrated even amongst the Marathi audience, so it definitely deserves that elevation.

Postcard (2014)

Cast: Radhika Apte, Subodh Bhave, and Vibhawari Deshpande.

Director: Gajendra Vitthal Ahire.

Postcard is a one-of-its-kind film. You will rarely find a movie that has three films in one, all attached by one common thread, and in the end, it is the thread that suffers the impact of three tragedies. Postcard stars some of the most talented Marathi artists. The most magical of all those tales is that of Radhika Apte who has fallen in love with a man who stays far, and she awaits his letter and Qasim (deliverer of messages) has to get her.

Kaakan (2015)

Cast: Aakash Banerjee, Jitendra Joshi, and Urmilla Kanetkar Kothare.

Director: Kranti Redkar.

Kaakan is actor Kranti Redkar’s directorial debut. A film that looks at love, companionship, faith, and society through the lens of time. Why the harshness of the world would do to lovers and how the lovers would react to it is Kaakan. Jitendra and Urmilla give one of their best performances in this movie It is better experienced than read about and is the perfect one to mark the end of this list for today.
