BRO is one of the most anticipated films in Telugu cinema. The film stars Powerstar Pawan Kalyan and Sai Dharam Tej in the lead roles and Samuthirakani has directed the film. In a detailed interview, he talks about the remake, working with Pawan Kalya, association with Trivikram, and future plans as an actor.
Working with Pawan Kalyan was never on my mind
When asked about getting to direct a chance to direct a star like Pawan Kalyan, Samuthirakani says that he started his career as an assistant director in 1994, and since then, has been working on whatever came his way. Post the release of Vinodhaya Sitham, I wanted to remake the film in multiple languages. One fine day, I happened to discuss the response with Pawan Kalyan Garu and had no idea he would show interest in doing the remake. Slowly things related to the remake fell into place and here we are ready with the release says Samuthirakani.
The response from fans made me emotional
Samuthirkani became emotional at BRO's trailer launch. When asked about the same, he says that it has been four since he heard the sound and cheers of the audience. "Vinodhaya Sitham had no theatrical release. So we didn't know the response of fans. But, the response that has been coming for 'Bro' is something else. After hearing the sound from the crowd post the trailer screening, I became emotional and assured myself that I am on the right track.
I never felt I was working with a star like Pawan Kalyan
When asked how difficult it was to handle a star like Pawan Kalyan, Samuthirakani said that in one of their conversations, Pawan Kalyan that God has given two hands to every human being. One to feed your family, the other to the poor. That very thought has made me curious about Kalyan Garu's personality. "I would go to the sets with an open mind and learn something or the other. Pawan sir is a very down-to-earth person and is a director's actor and not once I felt I was working with a star" says the noted director.
I made a lot of changes to the original
Speaking about the changes for the remake, Samuthirakani says that in Vinodhaya Sitham, the story deals with the challenges of a 50-year-old man. But here in 'Bro' he gave a mass touch to the film. Also, the interactions between the two key characters played by Pawan Kalyan and Sai Tej have been written in a hilarious manner.
Trivikram Garu is like a father figure
When asked about working with the likes of Trivikram, Samuthirakani says that everyone faces different situations in their lives and the same happened with BRO. But Trivikram held his hand and supported him throughout. I felt as if my father walked in and guided me on the project. His contribution to the film is immense and I have only learned from him through the making of BRO says the director.
It was an easy task to handle both the stars on the sets
Samuthirakani says he didn't take much pain in handling both the actors, one a superstar and another an emerging talent. "Their chemistry on the screen is enough to tell the whole story. I had done nothing extra and only gave basic instructions and everything fell into place automatically," says the director.
Thaman has stood by me as a rock
When asked about Thaman's work for the film, the popular director says the first time he saw S Thaman's re-recording, tears rolled down his eyes. He further adds that Thaman revealed to him that BRO's story is very close to his heart as his father passed away when he was 11 years old. Samuthirakani further adds that Thaman assured him that he would sit and ensure everything gets aligned with the release.
