When Bollywood filmmakers attempt to produce a historic film, it often leads to several controversies, owing to objections by certain caste organisations that work towards ‘safeguarding’ their culture like Shri Rajput Karni Sena. Films such as Padmaavat, Jodha Akbar, and Akshay Kumar's forthcoming Prithviraj have all received wrath of the organisations for allegedly showing the community in a bad light. Makers have been forced to change the title or sometimes, even face ban in certain states. Just days before the release, the film, Prithviraj has again landed in controversy as Akhil Bharatiya Veer Gurjar Mahasabha has said that the warrior was a Gurjar and hence, the film should portray him as a Gurjar and not a Rajput.

Akshay’s film, which is scheduled to release on June 3, is not the only film that faced protest by these organisations. Here are the films that have also faced criticism:

1

Padmaavat

7.2
Padmaavat, a film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, drew a lot of criticism from the Karni Sena. It made national news after the creators received a backlash from the Karni Sena, who threatened the director and actress of the film, Deepika Padukone, because the film was previously titled Padmavati. They claimed that the makers are portraying the queen in a bad light. Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh also appear in this movie.

Samrat Prithviraj

6.1
The caste organisation has taken notice of Akshay Kumar Prithviraj's most awaited film, and the organisation is asking that the title be changed. As per the Indian Express, Surjeet Singh Rathore, the president of the Karni Sena's youth wing, had three demands for the film makers: screening of the film before its release, the film be shown to the Rajput society, and the title of the film to have his full name Veer Yoddha Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan. Chandraprakash Dwivedi directed Prithviraj, which also features Manushi Chhillar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, and many more.

Jodhaa Akbar

Karni Sena followers also criticised Ashutosh Gowarikar's film Jodhaa Akbar. Luxurious outfits, according to the organisation, were intended to mislead history, and according to them, Jodha was not Akbar's wife. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan appeared in this film. Owing to this controversy, the film was never released in Rajasthan.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

6.7
Kangana Ranaut is no stranger to controversy. Her film Manikarnika too was met with backlash by the Karni Sena. According to the organisation, they claimed the film includes a footage of Queen Rani Lakshmi Bai dancing and a scenario where the queen is shown to have a relationship with a British officer. Manikarnika was a film about Rani Lakshmi Bai and her battle against the British Raj. Manikarnika was directed in part by Krish Jagarlamudi and then by Kangana. Ankita Lokhande, Jisshu Sengupta, Atul Kulkarni, and others star in this film.

Laxmii

2.1
The film Laxmii, starring Akshay Kumar, received a legal notice from the Karni Sena. According to them, the film's title sent the incorrect impression and was disrespectful to Goddess Laxmi. Later, the organisation wrote to Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar about the issue. The producers then renamed the film from Laxmmi Bomb to Laxmii. Raghava Lawrence's horror comedy Laxmii also stars Kiara Advani, Sharad Kelkar, Ashwini Kalsekar, and others.

Veer

4.3
The posters for Salman Khan's Veer were also destroyed by Karni Sena activists in Udaipur. Many theatres did not show the film because they felt it portrayed their community negatively. They found certain dialogues in the film ‘derogatory’. Zareen Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, and many more appeared in the 2010 film. The epic drama film, directed by Anil Sharma, is about a Pindari prince who travels to Britain to seek revenge Gyanendra Singh and the British. He does so by killing his son but falls in love with his daughter.
