A Human Certainty is tormented by voices from history, and its tangled notions of suffering are connected by entwined threads that include a current split, the sensual groove of mid-century pop music, Weegee's crime-scene photography, and pictures that the artist's grandmother, a spirit medium, took while travelling in Asia and Africa. Director Quaintance's short film and montage serve as a codec for connecting these unrelated threads and for understanding death and loss in all of its manifestations.
