Malayalam star Tovino Thomas, who is basking in the success of his latest movie 2018 , has come out in support of the wrestlers' protest. He took to Instagram to share the picture of internationally-acclaimed wrestlers being manhandled by the cops when they tried to march to the new Parliament building on Sunday.
The wrestlers have been protesting in Delhi for over a month now, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Chief of the Wrestling Federation of India. Singh, who is also a BJP Lok Sabha MP, faces allegations of sexually harassing seven women wrestlers, including a minor.
In an attempt to escalate their protest, the wrestlers decided to stage a demonstration at the newly inaugurated parliament building on Sunday. However, they were met with police resistance and were eventually loaded onto a bus amidst considerable struggle.
"They should be heard & their demands should be considered .Keep aside their achievements and accolades , but there is a justice that each and every citizen of this nation deserves and that justice should not be delayed , never be denied ! Jai Hind," Tovino posted on his Instagram page reacting to the incident.
Before Tovino, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan had expressed solidarity with the wrestlers. In his tweet, Kamal raised concerns about the apparent discrepancy in prioritising the safety of national sporting icons over a politician with a questionable criminal history.
The images of wrestlers facing police action have sent shockwaves across the country, with many expressing their dissatisfaction over the treatment received by these esteemed athletes who have brought great laurels to India in international competitions.
Besides his thriving film career, Tovino has established himself as someone unafraid to express his views on national issues. It is worth mentioning that Tovino garnered significant acclaim for his relief efforts during the devastating 2018 floods in Kerala, which is also the main subject of his latest blockbuster.
