Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan has been victim to multiple delays and has now been in the works since 2019. The movie, which will see the star essay the role of legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, will also be released in Bengali.

The latest news about the movie means that Maidaan will become Devgn’ first multilingual project, something that is seen increasingly in the country today.

According to a report published in Mid Day, the makers of the biographical sports film are planning to release the project in Bengali as well as Hindi, considering the fanfare the sport has in West Bengal.

“Football is gaining prominence in India today as a sport. Besides Goa, Kerala, and Hyderabad, even West Bengal is passionate about football, especially among the youth. To reach a [wider] audience, the makers want to reach out to the youth,” a source told Mid Day.

The source also adds that the makers are looking to finish the filming of the project and have completed filming major portions of the project and that when the COVID-19 situation eases up, they will travel abroad to film some patchwork footage.

There have recently been a number of Hindi projects that are choosing to release the movie in multiple languages considering the market Hindi films have in the country. Maidaan could also be added to this list, considering other states such as Kerala, Goa and Bengal have had a history of being ardent football fans.

Maidaan, directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, will follow the life of legendary Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, who is also considered to be the architect of modern Indian football. The movie is slated to hit theaters on June 3, 2022.
