Two unassuming films – Premendu Bikash Chaki’s Alaap and Manasi Sinha’s Eta Amader Golpo – have surprised the box office this summer. The films were released amid the scorching heatwave that engulfed South Bengal. Alaap features Abir Chatterjee and Mimi Chakraborty. On the other hand, Eta Amader Golpo has no conventional star cast. It features Saswata Chatterjee, Aparajita Adhya, and others. It did not also have a huge budget either for promotion or for the film. Yet, word-of-mouth worked wonders for both films.

According to Tolly Bangla Box Office’s report, Alaap earned Rs 40 lakh in the first week. Eta Amader Golpo earned Rs 31 lakh. However, the producers did not officially announce the collection figures. It was said that the films’ collections can differ from five to ten per cent of the reported figures.

The national multiplex collection figure of Alaap is stunning. In the first week, the film earned Rs 13 lakhs in the national multiplex. Ankush’s Mirza could not touch the figure even in three weeks. Ankush said that Mirza earned Rs 1,21,64,296 in two weeks. However, in the third week, its national multiplex earning is reportedly a mere Rs two lakh. The earning is reportedly Rs 12 lakhs in three weeks.

Eta Amader Golpo earned the same as Mirza in the national multiplex in the first week. Mirza was released on Eid. It earned eight lakhs in the first eight days. Eta Amader Golpo earned seven lakhs in the first week. According to Ankush, Mirza did a business of Rs 75 lakh in the first week. Alaap and Eta Amader Golpo lie far behind.
