Another Round bags Best International Feature Film: Where to watch this tale of friendship and drunkenness

Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round made history with Denmark’s fourth Academy Award win on April 25. Another Round or Druk, as it is known in Danish, is a film about friendship, alcohol and everything in between. This Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe-starrer bagged the Best International Feature Film award at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The film is based on Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud’s theory, which states that humans exist inherently with an alcohol blood level 0.05% too low. The four protagonists test the limits of inebriation in an experiment that requires them to get drunk and then consistently stay drunk everyday. Though Another Round is a comedy, it explores heavier themes of escapism and humanity. What begins as a fun experiment for this group of friends pushes them to confront deep-seated issues.

The emotional aspects of Another Round are further laden with the personal connect that Vinterberg has with his film. His 19-year-old daughter Ida, who was excited for her father’s film and was set to play Mikkelsen’s daughter on set, died in a highway accident four days into shooting the film. In his Oscar acceptance speech, an emotional Vinterberg revealed that the driver was looking into a cell phone when they crashed into Ida.

“We wanted to make a film that celebrates life. Four days into shooting, the implausible happened,” said Vinterberg in his speech. “If anyone cares to believe she is here with us somehow, you’ll be able to see her clapping and cheering with us. We ended up making this movie for her as her monument. So, Ida, this is a miracle that just happened, and you’re a part of this miracle. Maybe you’ve been pulling some strings somewhere, I don’t know, but this one is for you.”
