Anurag Kashyap at IFFK 2022: India is inherently a nepotistic country

One of the biggest attractions of the ongoing International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) taking place in the state capital was a masterclass by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. The acclaimed director talked about a number of subjects including patriarchy and nepotism. 

When asked about nepotism in Bollywood, the Gangs of Wasseypur director said, “India is inherently a nepotistic country.”

The director also talked about patriarchy, saying that the world has gone through a lot of change and that it changes you as well. “I have a daughter who is growing up and a life partner who questions everything ive done in a film,” said Kashyap.

He added that it's the people around you who change your way of seeing and it doesn't matter how much you change, because something will come out of your mouth and someone will point out there's some patriarchy left in you, and you can't hold onto that.

When the director was asked about a shot or moment he treasures from his body of work, he replied that the best shot in every film is sacrificed. When a fan asked about working with Ram Gopal Varma, the director said, “He is my film school.” 

The filmmaker also shared words of motivation to the packed crowd by saying that when you are so consumed by passion, nothing seems like a problem and that if one wants to be a filmmaker, start making short films because they travel. 

The Anurag Kashyap masterclass, which was held in Kairali and was moderated by Artistic director Bina Paul, was greeted with a packed crowd. 

The weeklong IFFK ends on March 25.
