Drishyam, starring superstar Mohanlal, is probably the one Malayalam film that has seen the most number of remakes in recent times. Apart from Mohanlal, the film also features actress Asha Sharath in the key role of IG Geeth Prabhakar. The actress, who has also reprised her roles in two other Drishyam remakes, says she never felt repetitive, and it’s all thanks to her co-stars who approached the characters differently.
Mohanlal-starrer Drishyam, helmed by Jeethu Joseph, was remade in Tamil as Papanasam , with Kamal Haasan in the lead. Asha Sharath was also part of the Tamil film as the tough cop. The Kannada remake Drishya too saw her reprising the role. But despite playing the same character in three different movies, Asha Sharath said it never felt repetitive. The Ashakal Aayiram actress made the remarks during an interview with The Cue Studio.
“"Never felt that I was doing the same thing over and over again. All the actors opposite me were different, and these were in different languages. Especially because, how Mohanlal conceived the character was not how Kamal Haasan did and Ravi Kumar also approached it differently. They did it like three different characters. So it does not feel like it is the same scene, same film,” she said.
Explaining further, Asha Sharath said that Kamal Haasan approached the character Suyambulingam very emotionally, while Mohanlal did it in a very subtle way. That difference was also there. She particularly cited the climax scene when Mohanlal’s Georgekutty made his points without turning dramatic, while Kamal Haasan’s Suyambulingam was very emotional that the actress feared she would be moved by it.

Drishyam revolves around Georgekutty, an ordinary cable TV operator, who would go to any extent to protect his family from cops. Asha Sharath plays the cop, whose son is murdered by Georgekutty’s family, and she seeks to find the truth. Considered on the best thrillers in Malayalam, Asha Sharath also won appreciation for her performance.
All Drishyam remakes have stayed true to the original film in plot and strutcture.
Drishyam 2 was also released in 2021, and again remade in other languages. Now, Drishyam 3 will release on April 2, 2026.
