Banaras, the launchpad of Zaid Khan, the son of MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan, released in theatres yesterday. The film, directed by Jayathirtha, has received mixed reviews, with pretty much everyone praising the cast and their performances, especially Zaid, Sonal Monteiro and Sujay Shastry, but panning the handling of the time-loop concept in the love story. The team has claimed that the film, which was released in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, amassed a whopping Rs 3 crore gross on Day 1. Given that the film was apparently awarded 60% subsidy by the Yogi Adityanath government for shooting primarily in Varanasi, and that the film has already done decent pre-release business by selling its satellite and digital rights to Zee Network, the makers are off to a good start.
Here's what netizens thought of the film:
#Banaras:- Below average, Director has wasted 2hrs to tell 15min of time loop concept which is also not convincing.. Zaid was good in his debut, Sonal looks good on screen. - Akash R Patil

#Banaras is a Decent Love Story in the backdrop of Kaashi with a Mystery Touch. Screenplay has fine twists but it could’ve been pleasing if it had been a little crispy. Varanasi locales are beautiful. Zaid Khan looks very Promising. Ajaneesh Music is Exceptional. – Sunil Gowda
