There are movies that leave you spellbound with their spectacular representation of visuals that may not actually exist in real life. Filmmakers create this magic on-screen using Visual Effects (VFX) - usually a combination of live-action shots and digital imagery. It can be achieved using the latest technology, computer software, and of course the human brain to program it.

Today’s List hai toh hit hai is all about some of the best VFX films ever made, So let’s begin! This is your host Nikhil.

Mowgli: The legend of the Jungle

A 2018 American adventure drama film based on the novel All the Mowgli Stories by Rudyard Kipling. The movie stars Rohan Chand as Mowgli, Matthew Rhys as John Lockwood, Freida Pinto as Messua. The voice and motion capture, which is a unique VFX technique, and is performed by Christian Bale, Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, Peter Mullan, Naomi Harris, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The story is set in the dense forests of India, where a human child named Mowgli is raised by a panther named Bagheera and a bear named Baloo. He is fondly accepted by all the animals in the jungle except the tiger Shere Khan. Trouble brews for Mowgli as he confronts his origins and the threat of Shere Khan

Avatar

James Cameron's Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film. It stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri. The film is set in the mid-22nd century in the fictional moon, Pandora, of a planet from another solar system. The moon’s environment is toxic, and Avatars who are genetically engineered human- Na’vi hybrids must link to human minds to allow free movement on Pandora. The movie has a whopping 2500 visual effects and the VFX has spectacularly created the entire world of Pandora.

The Matrix

The Matrix is a 1999 science fiction action movie starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano. The movie’s fame further led to two feature film sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The plot follows a computer hacker Neo who is led into a forbidden underworld by a beautiful stranger Trinity. As he advances, Neo learns the life he knew is the deception of a wicked artificial intelligence. A motion picture special visual effects company Manex Visual Effects has provided the VFX in this movie, bagging the Academy Award for Technical Achievement.

Pan’s Labyrinth

A 2006 Spanish dark fantasy film starring Sergi López, Ivana Baquero. The storyline is set in General Franco’s Spain in 1944 and revolves around 11-year old Ofelia who is mistreated by her step-father, a sadistic army officer. Ofelia is drawn into Pan’s Labyrinth - a magical land of mythical existence. The VFX crew embarked on a journey of artistic and technical inspiration bringing director Guillermo Del Toro’s vision of life.

Jurassic Park

A 1993 blockbuster hit directed by Steven Spielberg is based on a novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. Jurassic Park is widely regarded as a masterpiece that is followed by its sequels, boasting stunning visuals and sound effects. The movie focuses on a team of palaeontologists and a mathematician who are invited to assess a genetically engineered dinosaur theme park. Chaos ensues at the park after the fencing that holds these prehistoric creatures captive malfunctions.

Interstellar

A 2014 epic science fiction movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, that bagged an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects has a star cast of Matthew McConaughey as Joseph Cooper, Anne Hathaway as Dr Amelia Brand in the lead. The story that is set in a dystopian future follows a team of twelve volunteers who travel through the wormhole to survey the planets capable of sustaining human life.

Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 action film starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult in the lead. It is a sequel to the original Mad Max films starring Mel Gibson set in post-apocalyptic Australia. The movie received several accolades along with ten Academy Award nominations, the plot revolves around a woman named Furiosa who rebels against a tyrannical leader in search of her homeland with the aid of a few female prisoners and Max.

2001: A Space Odyssey

The 1968 sci-fi movie is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made and is based on the novel by Arthur C Clarke. The movie directed by the brilliant Stanley Kubrick accomplished an impressive illusion of zero gravity and space travel using cinematic techniques. The story is a tale of an epic voyage undertaken by a crew of astronauts along with their revolutionary supercomputer set out to trace the extraterrestrial monolith on the lunar surface.
