The Tamil film industry has kickstarted 2024 on a great note, with the releases of some of the most anticipated films during the Pongal season. Captain Miller, the period action film that stars Dhanush in the lead role, and Sivakarthikeyan’s highly awaited sci-fi film Ayalaan, are the two big-ticket Tamil films that hit the theatres recently. Both the films are performing very well at the Tamil Nadu, rest of India, and overseas, and have crossed the 50-crore mark, However, things are a bit different at the Kerala box office.
As per the latest updates, the Arun Matheswaran directorial has been performing exceeding well at the Kerala box office. The period action film has reportedly crossed the Rs. 5-crore mark in the state, thus emerging as leading man Dhanush’s all-time highest-grossing film . The excellent reviews and word-of-mouth publicity have contributed to Captain Miller’s box office collections in Kerala. Notably, the movie surpassed its own opening collections in Kerala on Day 3, by collecting over Rs. 1.2 crore.

However, things are not so favourable for Ayalaan, the Sivakarthikeyan starrer which also hit the theatres for Pongal, at the Kerala box office. As per the reports, the Ravi Kumar directorial has ended up as a box office disaster in the state and is struggling to cross even the Rs. 1-crore mark within the first 5 days of its release. If things go at the same rate, the sci-fi entertainer might come to the end of its theatrical run in Kerala, in a few more days.
Trade analysts suggest that Captain Miller has the potential to survive at the Kerala box office, even after the humongous release of Mohanlal’s upcoming fantasy period film, Malaikottai Vaaliban. The Arun Matheswaran directorial is expected to register a decent second-weekend collection in the state, owing to the great reviews and rapid increase in audience rush. However, the number of screens might be reduced by that time.
However, Ayalaan, on the other hand, might come to an end of its theatrical run in Kerala once the Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial hits the big screens. The movie showed no significant improvement even during its first weekend in Kerala and registered its lowest collection in the state on its first Monday. The mixed reviews and lack of hype have clearly impacted the Kerala collections of the Sivakarthikeyan starrer.
