About Chhaava

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Pictures, Chhaava tells the story of the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who ruled from 1681 to 1689. The film, set on a grand scale, features Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, Divya Dutta as Sambhaji Maharaj’s stepmother Soyarabai, and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Chhaava was released in India on February 14, 2025.

The film also faced controversy when certain groups objected to the depiction of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj dancing, claiming that historical records do not support such an event. Reportedly, after politician Raj Thackeray advised director Laxman Utekar to remove the song featuring Vicky Kaushal dancing as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the director complied and edited it out of the film.
