Darlings finally arrived on Netflix today and unsurprisingly has already started trending on the streaming giant’s platform. The film, which marked Alia Bhatt’s debut production venture, revolves around the story of a woman who decides to take matters into her own hands after suffering domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. Netizens definitely had a lot to say of the film, and flocked to Twitter to voice their opinions.
Many netizens had nothing but good things to say of the film, in particular the performances of the film’s cast comprising of Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew. The film marked the directorial debut of Jasmeet K Reen, and many users also praised the filmmaker’s direction as well. One user wrote “Watched #DarlingsOnNetflix it’s invigorating, thought provoking and carefully structured movie. Simple yet Hard hitting , honest & empathetic with a pinch of humour”.
The way the film shone a light on a hard hitting issue like domestic violence was also appreciated by many netizens. Calling the film a ‘must watch’, one user spoke of how the movie showed the reality of so many women. Another spoke of how the film dealt with such a thoughtful subject through its story.
Alia’s performance in particular was singled out by many netizens. One user called Alia one of the best actresses in Bollywood at the moment and lauded her choice of scripts. Another spoke of how there seemed to be no role that Alia could not master.
Filmmaker Shamas Nawab Siddiqui too showered praise on the film.
However, there were also many users who were not all impressed by the film. Dubbing the film a ‘one time watch’, some users spoke of how the film’s screenplay and direction could have been improved. Most of the critics however, agreed that the cast has put up powerful performances.
