The first trailer of the six times Tony Award-winning movie adaptation of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen dropped this Tuesday, leaving fans amused. Slated for October 22nd release, the movie, responsible for making Ben Platt the superstar he is today, will see him playing the titular role of Evan Hansen, a socially anxious teenage boy who’s thrust into the spotlight after a lie he tells about the tragic death of a classmate. Things spiral out of control.
The heart-wrenching tale has an ensemble of brilliant actors like Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Danny Pino, and Amandla Stenberg alongside Ben Platt. The first trailer of the movie offers everything that musical lovers would hope for. The emotional and touching story captures the journey from a sudden suicide to a therapy-ridden child finding his solace within it.
Ben’s on-screen persona as a 27-year-old boy playing a teenager lets his vulnerability shine through scenes of emotional impact, with moist eyes and a hesitant smile. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Platt and the film’s director Stephen Chbosky discussed the decision to cast him and begin production in September last year during the pandemic. “His understanding of the character is so complete and so profound,” said Chbosky.
“I couldn’t imagine anybody else playing it. It’s his part. I felt very strongly about it. And to me, it was never even a consideration,” he further reiterated.
The performances by the supporting cast have been equally praise-worthy. Amy Adams, portraying a pivotal supporting character displays her pitch in harmony with the overall tonality of the film. The trailer has left fans anticipating its release.
