After deferring the release of Salute earlier this month, Dulquer Salmaan took to his social networking page to announce that the release of Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan, which is also produced by his company Wayfarer Films, has been postponed due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in Kerala and the restrictions by the State government.

Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan, which is directed by Arun Vaiga and has Saiju Kurup in the titular role, was scheduled to hit theatres on January 28. The movie, touted to be a family entertainer, also has Siju Wilson, Shani Shaki, Johny Antony, Sudheer Karamana and Shabareesh Varma in pivotal roles.

The film, which evolves against a backdrop of a wedding in Cherthala, had completed its shooting before the pandemic and had to shift its release date twice now due to the lockdown. The movie was initially set to release last year in April-May and was then pushed to January 28, 2022.

Dulquer in his social media post had stated that “the movie is a labour of love and we hope to release it as soon as we can”. Earlier this month, the Mollywood star had also pushed the release of his investigative thriller, Salute, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. The movie, directed by Rosshan Andrrews, was set to hit theatres on January 14.

Meanwhile, Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan marks Saiju Kurup’s 100th film in his career. In an earlier interview with us, the actor talked about roping in Dulquer as a producer. “We had shot the movie and I had asked Dulquer to watch it. He agreed to come onboard as a producer but I asked to take the call only after he had seen the movie. He watched and liked it, and that’s how he decided to bankroll the movie,” said Saiju, who plays the lead role of a goon named Jayan as he organises his niece’s wedding.
