Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda addressed a contentious statement he had made in the past while speaking at the pre-release event of his upcoming film, Family Star . Before the release of Liger, he claimed that the 2022 sports drama would shatter his previous box office records and earn Rs 200 crore from its ticket sales.
There was massive pre-release hype surrounding Liger, leading to a significant opening worldwide. However, the film failed to strike a chord with audiences and critics alike. It was a critical and commercial disaster, making Vijay Deverakonda the subject of media mockery and online trolling.
Deverakonda seems to have taken the failure in stride and remains steadfast in his box-office ambitions. "During Pelli Choopulu days when someone asked me what kind of news I would like to hear about myself, I said I wanted to hear that Vijay Deverakonda's film collected Rs 100 crore. That was my dream, but it happened with my fourth film, Geetha Govindam," said Deverakonda.
Vijay Deverakonda addresses box office ambitions
Geetha Govindam was a 2019 romantic comedy written and directed by Parasuram. Family Star marks the second collaboration between Deverakonda and Parasuram, and the actor-director duo is confident of achieving another hit.
Deverakonda noted that despite making all efforts, he was not able to deliver a film that could surpass the success of Geetha Govindam to date. "Many advised me that making such a statement at this point in my career may seem arrogant. I want to tell them that announcing that I will score a Rs 200 crore box office success is not wrong, but not fulfilling that promise is. One day I will achieve that. This is not arrogance but my confidence in myself," he announced.
In Family Star, Deverakonda plays the role of a middle-class boy with big ambitions. The film, starring Mrunal Thakur as the female lead, will hit the screens on April 5.
