Celebrated Marathi actor Chinmay Mandlekar, who got noticed by the pan-Indian audience in the film The Kashmir Files, is all set to play Nathuram Godse in the film Gandhi Godse - Ek Yudh.

Considering that being the man responsible for killing Mahatma Gandhi, Nathuram Godse is a controversial figure who is largely hated by most Indians, Chinmay was asked at the trailer launch of the film if he is worried about finding himself in any controversies for playing Godse.

Chinmay said, "These days, one can get into a controversy for anything, even as silly as stepping out to have pani puri. But as artistes and filmmakers, we should not focus on such incidents. When the film was offered to me, and Raj ji (referring to director Rajkumar Santoshi) narrated the script to me, I was trying to understand the intention of the story, and what it aims to say overall. When you understand the importance of the story, it does not matter which character you are playing -- be it the hero or a villain."

"It is true that when you play a character like Nathuram Godse, who is a controversial figure, the thought does cross your mind that there is a possibility that there can be some kind of controversy. But, eventually, as an actor, you only focus on your performance. I just did that in the film," he further explained.

The actor was present along with the cast and crew of the film for the trailer launch in Mumbai.

Gandhi Godse - Ek Yudh is directed and written by National Award-winning filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi. It also features Deepak Antani, Tanisha Santoshi, Pawan Chopra and Arif Zakaria. It is slated to release in theatres on January 26.
