Veteran actor Deepak Antani, who is known for playing Mahatma Gandhi as a theatre artiste multiple times and even features in Limca Book of Records - 2022 for the same, is all set to play Bapu in Rajkumar Santoshi's Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh. Deepak also features in the India Book of Records - 2019 under the top 100 records for Most Performances as Mahatma Gandhi.
At the trailer launch event of the film in Mumbai recently, Deepak surprised everyone with his response when he was asked if it was a cakewalk for him to play Bapu in the film, having done so several times on stage.
Deepak said, "It is true that I have been playing Gandhi in theatre for years, and the more I play him, the more I understand his personality. However, doing a film - that too of an iconic filmmaker like Rajkumar Santoshi - was quite a task. Understanding his vision and delivering the performance was not easy. In fact, I was a little nervous. But I think he extracted the best performance from me."
The actor also shared an incident about how his family reacted when they got to know that he is doing a Rajkumar Santoshi film. "My son is Raj ji's fan. He is one of those fans who repeats dialogues whenever he watches Andaz Apna Apna on TV. So, after signing the contract for the film, I called my son to tell him the news. He was excited the moment he heard that it was Raj ji's film. So, I had my family as well as Raj ji to impress with my acting," smiled the veteran actor.
Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh also stars Chinmay Mandlekar, Tanisha Santoshi, Pawan Chopra and Arif Zakaria, among others. The music of the film is composed by AR Rahman. The film releases on January 26 in theatres.
