Writer-director James Gunn is a force to be reckoned with. Having directed the previous two instalments of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, he is responsible for the third volume as well. During a promotional press event with Collider for his upcoming movie The Suicide Squad, he divulged some details about the highly-anticipated Marvel film.

Although the script has been finished for ages, the production on the awaited sequel is scheduled to begin in Georgia in November. Gunn revealed that the official name of the movie would be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He’s currently making some minor changes in the script to formulate a new draft.

Coming to the plot, a lot is expected to have changed since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, due to the events on the main MCU timeline, including the death of Gamora in (Zoe Saldana) in Avengers: Infinity War, followed by the sudden rise of a different version of the character from an earlier timeline.

Gunn clarified that when it comes to integrating the happenings from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Guardians of the Galaxy, he has to pay attention in order to reflect the developments in the characters, for example Gamora’s arc continuing from Endgame. However, Marvel has not asked him to include any future setups and references, leaving the entire space up to him.

The recent shows of Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Loki and WandaVision, have introduced multiple new elements into the main storyline, bringing about a multiverse-infused era of the MCU, and the subsequent entry of Kang the Conqueror.

The surprise lies how Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will fit into this expanding puzzle, and thus fans can’t control their excitement for Gunn to get the gang back together. With many of the old faces returning in their previous roles, including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Bradley Cooper as Rocket and Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit the theatres on May 23, 2023.
