After her slew of success on the big screen, Vidya Balan seems to be trying to replicate her triumphant record in the digital space as well. The actress’ last few films, including Shakuntala Devi (2020) and Sherni (2021) have all had OTT releases, Jalsa being the latest. The star recently opened up about her recent film and her successful OTT track record.

In conversation with Firstpost, the actress talked about why she chose to do Jalsa, saying that she considered it a film she wanted to take to people, and her character of Maya Menon, someone she wanted to ‘live’. She talked about how the film had the kind of creative atmosphere that was good for all those involved, recounting how everyone on the film’s sets were equally invested in Jalsa.

She also had nothing but good things to say of her Jalsa director, Suresh Triveni, with whom she had collaborated on Tumhari Sulu. the actress revealed that Triveni pushed her outside her comfort zone, and she had loved her Jalsa character because of how ‘unexpected’ she was. She also talked about how she and Triveni would spend hours discussing the script.

Regarding her films’ digital release, Balan said she was ‘thrilled’ how digital platforms were willing to back ‘unconventional’ films. She also felt that she made a ‘niche’ for herself in the digital space, as her recent films were all direct to OTT releases. “I am a greedy actor, and I just want to tell stories and connect to people irrespective of any medium,” she added.

Jalsa, Sherni and Shakuntala Devi can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
