The IPL is India’s biggest sporting celebration and this year’s tournament has reached its playoff stages. The first game in the playoffs is the first qualifier, which will see Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals take on each other for a direct spot in the IPL final.
Gujarat Titans, who are one of the two new teams to the tournament, defied all odds and confirmed their dominance from the get go. The team has had a fantastic first season, and has also finished on top of the table with 20 points.
Led by former Mumbai Indians allrounder Hardik Pandya, Gujarat Titans had a great auction and their results on the field is proof for this. Pandya is also their leading run getter followed closely by Shubman Gill. Afganistani Spin Wizard Rashid Khan is their most lethal bowler, with 18 wickets and sixth in the purple cap race.
The team is expected to go with their best 11 for the first qualifier, which will include Gill, Matthew Wade, David Miller, Lockie Ferguson and Mohammed Shami. Shami has also been pivotal in the bowling department, with as many scalps as Khan. Rashid’s spin bowling could be the changing point in the game held at the Eden Gardens.
Rajasthan Royals, who won the maiden IPL trophy, has looked primed and ready to emulate that season in this year’s tournament. Led by Sanju Samson, the team has caught the eye of cricket fans around the country. Finishing with nine wins in the group games, Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal lead the orange cap and purple cap races respectively.
Buttler has had three hundreds and 3 fifties in this year’s tournament and has been the most dangerous opener. While his spot is confirmed in the crunch game, other players could include Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Prasidh Krishna and Chahal.
The last time the two teams faced each other, the Titans put up an impressive 192 on the board, with captain Pandya smashing 87 not out in just 52 balls after the openers failed to impact the game. Abhinav Manohar and David Miller also gave the captain great company. Chasing the score down, Jos Butler scored 54 in just 24 balls, but the rest of the batting lineup crumbled. RR were restricted to just 155 as Lockie Ferguson and Yash Dayal picked up three wickets.
The winners of this first qualifier will get a direct ticket to the big final while the losers will get another shot at the final, facing the winners of the first eliminator between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
