Aamir Khan's proposed adaptation of the Mahabharata is a long-standing passion project, often described by the actor as a 'dream.' Aamir recently produced Vir Das' directorial debut film, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, where he made a cameo apperance and following this release, Aamir was asked about his long-awaited project, Mahabharata.
Speaking to News18, Aamir Khan shared that Mahabharata is his dream and he would love to have the opportunity to do that, but called it a big responsibility. "Indians are so strongly connected, it is in our blood. I don’t think there is any Indian who hasn’t read the Bhagwat Gita or, at the very least, heard it from their grandmother. Making a film, which is so fundamental for all Indians, is also a big responsibility. I often say this, ‘You can let Mahabharata down, Mahabharata will never let you down,'" he said.
He explained that if someone did a bad job, they would be letting it down, and added that he wanted to ensure that if he ever made the film, he would make it in such a way that all Indians would feel truly proud.

The actor further added that over the years, audiences had witnessed many large-scale Hollywood entertainers such as The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, and that the world had already seen such spectacles. However, he emphasised that the Mahabharata was the mother of all such stories.
He expressed his belief that Indians would feel extremely proud if the project were implemented well and said that this is why he is taking his time, as he wants to make sure that everything is done properly.
Reports suggest that Mahabharata will be Aamir Khan’s last film. In June 2025, the actor told Raj Shamani, “Maybe after doing this, I will feel that I have nothing left to do. I cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that."
During earlier interviews, when Aamir was asked about the casting of Mahabharata, he chose to remain silent. Although several names have surfaced over the years, the Ghajini actor said that the final casting would depend on the script and who suited each role.
