In the world of streaming, it is not an understatement to call Netflix and Amazon the veterans of all platforms. The two have been delivering top-notch content for several years and continue to do so. Netflix is currently the most trending name in India, thanks to two of the most anticipated and well-reviewed IPs of the year: Imtiaz Ali's directed Amar Singh Chamkila and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s foray into the streaming space Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The world has been hooked on these two, which has benefited the platform.

But do we ever get to know the numbers behind this success? Well, Netflix last year began publishing their half-yearly report called the Netflix Engagement Report about viewership and what worked and how much. The first report the streamer published was from January 2023 to June 2023. In May 2024, they released the report for July 2023 to December 2023.

2023 was a very glorious year for Hindi cinema and Indian cinema in general. This also means the platforms have had a good time too. The Indian content on Netflix, as per the Engagement Report, amassed a total of over 1 billion views in the second half of 2023. The streamer has indeed made a global impact, with their original IPs attracting audiences. To give you a fair idea of the viewership garnered by the shows and films, we discuss the India-specific section today. Read on to learn everything you should know about the same.

The Statistics!

The total list of 400 titles that were leading on the Netflix board from across the world includes over 11 Indian titles in leading positions. Among these, there are seven movies and four shows. The topmost movie to make it to the list, in the 83rd position, is the Sujoy Ghosh directorial Jaane Jaan, led by Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vijay Varma, and Jaideep Ahlawat. The movie amassed 20.2 million views during the set period. It is followed by Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan, directed by Atlee and also starring Nayanthara and Deepika Padukone, with 16.2 million views. The list then includes Khufiya (12.1 million), OMG 2 (11.5 million), Lust Stories 2 (9.2 million), Dream Girl 2 (8.2 million), and Curry & Cyanide (8.2 million).

As for the shows, it is not a surprise that The Railway Men, backed by Yash Raj Films and starring Babil Khan, Kay Kay Menon, R. Madhavan, and an ensemble cast, is topping the charts. The show, which made a significant impact upon its release, amassed 10.6 million views. It is followed by Kohraa, a show that left audiences haunted, with 6.4 million views. Raj & DK’s shift from The Family Man to the pulpy story Guns & Gulaabs also garnered 6.4 million views, followed by the stellar Kaala Paani, which garnered 5.8 million views.

One thing to keep in mind is that these numbers have been recorded within a certain time frame and may be different now. However, they do show good progression. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
